Following massive success at the box office, 'Brokeback Mountain' is set to be turned into an opera production, with the New York City Opera commissioning a composer based on the short story that inspired the film.
Annie Proulx wrote 'Brokeback Mountain' in 1997, which was turned into the successful movie starring Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal and directed by Ang Lee in 2005.
Composer Charles Wuorinen, who has been commissioned to compose the opera, said in a statement that, "Ever since encountering Annie Proulx's extraordinary story I have wanted to make an opera on it, and it gives me great joy that Gerard Mortier and New York City Opera have given me the opportunity to do so."
The opera is set to premiere in 2013.
